What is Fasting - Questions for Beginners

What is fasting

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Royal Hotel for their generous donation of 150 pieces of cake to our church on Sunday the 23 December 2025.

This thoughtful contribution was shared among the congregation and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Gestures such as this reflect the strong sense of community and goodwill that we value so highly.

We are grateful to the Royal Hotel for their kindness and support, and we appreciate the role they play in helping strengthen local community connections.

Thank you once again to the Royal Hotel for this generous donation.

Why do people fast?

People fast for various reasons. One reason is to say "God, you are more important to me than anything else.". Another reason could be to clean out the "static" so you can hear God's voice better when you read your bible or pray. It also helps you to learn self-control, like a muscle but for your spirit. You learn to focus your heart and mind on praying about something important.

What do you do during a fast?

Pray - Talk to God more often, just like you would do with a best friend or family member

Read - Spend time in your Bible. Listen for what God might be saying to you

Listen - Be quiet sometimes and let God put thoughts and ideas into your heart

What fasting is NOT?

Fasting is not a diet or about losing weight. It is not a way to make God love you more - He already loves you completely and unconditionally. It is not a public show but rather a private thing you do between you and God (You don't have to tell everyone).

Different types of fasting?

There are over 20 types of fasting that you can do. Each year, Victory Chapel engages a corporate (a fast with the whole church) Daniel Fast. People are not forced to partake of it, but are encouraged to do so. The Daniel Fast is the most popular albeit slightly expensive. Individuals are not held to the standard. You can do your own fast, as long as you do it for the right reasons. It must be between you and God. You can view the other types of fasting mentioned in the Bible here (https://kingministries.com/king-ministries/31-different-kinds-of-biblical-fasts/?gad_campaignid=22826610908)

How can children learn to fast?

Try skipping snacks, sweets or soda for a day and use that craving as a reminder to pray or read your bible.

Turn off video games, social media or YouTube just for an afternoon or a full day. Use that time for family devotion, to read a Bible story or listen to music.

Start small! Even fasting one meal or for a few hours is a great start. The goal is your heart and not being perfect.

The Key to fasting

"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed.”

Proverbs 1
