The Power of Unity: The Epitome
The word epitome can be defined as a typical ideal or example. In other words, it is the most perfect example, representation or manifestation of something. So, what is the epitome of Unity?
Although there are many examples of unity, are they really perfect - without flaw? Are they ideal?
The perfect example of unity can be seen in the Trinity - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. All three are equally God but have 3 distinct functions or roles. (For example, you can be a father to your child, a husband to your wife and a son to your father). You are still the same person but have different roles.
The Trinity is a perfect example of unity, the epitome of unity, because all three exist in perfect fellowship and community. They are not separate, they are one God and are perfectly unified.
Unity establishes oneness. God, in his infinite wisdom, replicated unity into creation (Gen 1:27). God's design was to have humans be unique as seen by the differences in individuals (different colours, shapes, sizes, characteristics, etc.).
We are to embrace our uniqueness while also striving to maintain unity. He wants us to follow His perfect example.
"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." ~ Gen 1:27
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
“I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me." ~ John 17:20-23
